Well, folks...we're in the homestretch for school, but I have lost all steam. I cried a few tears today bc the weather is cold again and dreary and honestly I am tired.  How can life still be so full even with isolation.  Kev says I bear too many burdens.  He may be right.  I would love to not bear any.  I hope I can change this about myself in the summer and fall.  But I know I am blessed and that knowledge does bring me comfort.  It just doesn't bring my mind peace and that is exhausting :)

Yikes today felt like a normal old day and it made me realize how I dislike that. There were so many good fun things in the day but they were just too many of them. Makes me realize I’m going to have to fight to change things as we return to normal. But I did have fun seeing all my preschool kids faces from their cars as they drove by our preschool parade. And we visited a couple preschool kiddos homes as well just to say hi from afar. Then a quick trip to Kroger and home for our first themed dinner—Harry Potter thanks to Ashley. And then back out to drive around and see our bestie for ethan for his16th birthday drive by and Sue Sue for a TP delivery. All good things and the weather was gorgeous but I’m just getting too old to have a very full day. And I think being home bound the last month or two has made me realize maybe I don’t need to be out as much... stuff to ponder :)

A beautiful day. Church online. The kids made bfast on their own. Mostly ash. Lots of zooming and a church scavenger hunt. I’m struggling with anxiety even in this stay at home time so that stinks.

A busy but laid back day.  This is our new norm.  To have both.  Ash sewed for the first time. A Harry Potter pillowcase.  Dyl worked on b-ball.  He’s got a lot of dedication. Lo built a tent, played games, and watched movies. Shelb had violin zoom lessons for a couple hours and is mask making again. Hailey seems to study all the time. We had Kroger pizza night and watched the karate kid.  We’re working or watching old movies❤️

Well it hit me today that we’re at social distancing day 40. And for some reason the story of Noah’s ark struck my brain. On a small level this pandemic has felt kind of like a flood that has isolated us to our homes for 40 days and 40 nights. It really has seemed in many ways like an eternity that life has been normal. I wonder if that’s how Noah and his family felt when they opened the door to the ark and finally got out onto what seemed like a new world.  In two weeks we are allowed to slowly socially understands ourselves. I wonder what this will look like and feel like. Right now no one wants to get near you when you shop, everyone but Kevin and I was wearing facemasks today. Some people even had protective eye gear on.  There are hardly any cars on the roads. There are very few people in most stores except Kroger who I think is making a killing off groceries.  I just wonder how life will get back to normal and then I wonder even further what normal is or should be. Hmmm.

CHS Day 8 (Isolation day 25!)

Well, somedays it feels like we have been doing this a lot longer than we have. Today was one of those days.  I could barely crawl out of bed and the rest of the kids were already mostly up and moving already.  Logan was in rare form and just didn't want to be messed with or told what to do.  My thought is the kid gets up too early.  He likes to race Ash to be the first to be in the "study sunroom".  They are often there around 7:30. Yikes.  We don't really have to start school til 9.  But I guess I shouldn't curb the enthusiasm.  We had a whole new set of worksheets/expectations for Logan today, but somehow we aren't on the same time table as the teachers, so we still have old worksheets...which is odd bc I think Logan works longer and harder than Ash and Dyl...but he is a bilingual student so maybe that is part of it. But today he was just over it.  And I didn't push it.  By 11 he'd had it and I let him do a puzzle, eat out on his playset table.  I would have let him play all afternoon, but I had a zoom staff meeting for preschool...so I let him play on the ipad (spanish math) for a couple hours.  That cheered him up. He loves learning on technology....and I'm sure he snuck some angry birds gametime in.  After my meeting we headed to the open common area and flew his new kite.  He was pretty excited about that kite...it's the nicest one we've ever had.  It just wasn't windy enough though and he and Dyl didn't have patience enough...and wouldn't listen to pops giving advice via text :) lol. That's kind of how our day went.  Lots of lack of patience.   We definitely needed the patience song :) :) The other kids have pretty much done their own thing.  Dyl was finished fairly early with school...and then outside playing bball.  Ash was done at like 9am with school.  Good grief, that girl flies through schoolwork! I should just have her doing Dylan's work alongside him.  But I keep her busy with artwork...today I suggested finding Harry Potter art...she found these darling bookmarks to make....they turned out so cute!  And she's my one planning out all our Easter food and desserts. The girl seems to have my knack for craftiness/food creativity.  She also helped me with a read-a-loud for preschool.   She's probably my biggest helper.   Dyl...he's gotten back into reading Garfield comics...I think he's pretty bored, but he's finding ways to occupy his time.  Today he seemed out of sorts...kinda tired.  We love this lifestyle, but we we are all on different schedules so sometimes that can be hard.  For instance, I know it's hard for Hailey and Shelby to hear us playing outside at noon knowing that have a whole day and evening of work.  I'd be mad about that too!  But they showed their faces...Shelby probably less than Hays bc she had her virtual violin lesson today....but both seem to have tons of work.  Shelby definitely more than normal bc she doesn't even have time to run now.  Hays at least helped make her yummy pesto pasta dinner and led our devotional.  And Shelb joined us for poetry/creative writing.  And Ash, Lo, kev and I went for a little bike jaunt on the trail.  It's so nice that Logan is a stable bike rider now.  It allows us so much more freedom to go on family bike rides!  YAY!  But that feisty boy sure gets made when something doesn't go his way.  He's almost swearing at the pedals if he can't get on them right away.  He's got the Gritz temper :) lol!  But it was a good day overall. The days are starting to really blur together.  I'm just ready for the 2nd week in May when it can officially be summer!  hallelujah!

And the most imp news of the day...Shelby announced that a month from today is her BIRTHDAY!  Her Sweet 16!  She is big on her bday, but I fear it's going to be a socially distanced one and to be honest I am sooooo over socially distanced bday creativity!  People make way too big a deal about it doing drive-bys, etc.  I think this all defeats the purpose of being social distant and staying at home!  Is it so bad to just stay at home and have a bday with your family???  Those are always my fav bdays!  Hopefully they are Shelby's too bc that is what she's likely getting...

Corona day 24--Palm Sunday

I'm getting a little behind on the blog...and I still haven't figured out how to post pics easily.  Maybe this week I'll have time.  But the days still seem to be long (or too short...can they be both?) and the nights are late...with two girls still up extra late doing hw. Honestly I think homeschooling is harder in some ways for some kids.  But it was a good day.  Kinda lazy.  We slept in.  Had a nice palm Sunday bfast and enjoyed our Palm service online.  It was extra fun bc we got to see the videos our friends had sent in with their kids waving palm branches...ours included.  It almost made up for not being in church in person seeing the kids waving palms.  It's always my favorite and I love the Hosanna song!  Plus Ash was supposed to do a sign language piece in the program (Logan up on stage too), but of course all canceled.  I did love the cute palm waving videos of the kids. But it wasn't quite enough so we played the song again after the service and walked around the living room and waved the palms again. The kids loved it!  Not! lol :). I got lots of eye rolls! haha :). It's fun to torture teens especially...and 20 year olds :). Hailey and Shelb did hw most of the day. The rest of us just chilled.  The boys played Wii (their new thing to do together).  Logan actually works up so much of a sweat that it looks like he's run a marathon. I remember Dylan doing that at his age. :) I love Wii sports!  And we spent a little time outside doing sidewalk chalk.  It was supposed to be an inspirational thing for Dylan's school, but it turned out to be weird sayings the kids came up with.  I really didn't care bc I'm not the biggest fan of chalk bc we all walk on it and it gets tracked into my house.  And it did right after this.  The kids also enjoyed pogo sticking and skateboarding. It's nice that we get so bored we are pulling out toys we rarely use! lol  Anyway...Shelb had a zoom call with her track/xc team.  (she is so over zoom...and I understand).  I had a zoom call too with my church Middle school leadership team...Shelby included.  And then we had a nice taco dinner led by pastor Dyl who has become our expert at leading devotions.  We were going to venture out to the lake for a sandwich dinner, but it was a little too chilly and the girls had too much hw. And then we were going to go to our waterfall near us, but no one really wanted to go.  We have a house full of party poopers!  So we (5 of us) just took a long bike ride across the road down a new trail.  It wasn't meant to be long bc Logan just learned to ride his bike...so Kev just walked/ran along side him, but the kid actually knows how to ride a bike well and did amazing!  So poor Kev ended up walking/running like 5miles bc Logan was so fast.  Poor guy!  At least he got his workout in for the week! lol :)  It was a nice night and ended up being nice weather.  And Loggy was very proud of himself for riding his (Hailey's old) pink bike all over.  I'm sure there were other things we accomplished, but it didn't seem like it.  And now a new week starts...more homeschooling and Easter prep...I love Easter usually...we'll see how virtual Easter is.  I think I might like it more :). It's the first year I haven't bought any easter outfits, bc I didn't think it made sense to spend the money when we didn't need to dress up at all.  That feels weird, but then again, all this feels weird!

Corona day 23

Well I don’t know why I’m so tired but I’m wiped out!  Just going to Kroger today for 30mins was taxing.  But it was better than Walmart who was limiting shoppers today. 👎We were there last night.  I hate shipping usually but especially now. 😳😷. Is it sad that the best part of our day was finding   a couple bags of flour on the shelf after all the stores have been out for weeks!  😂Yippee, Ash can bake again.  I will post more tomorrow.  But I will say that my April fools joke to dyl was finally a success today!  I think I scarred him from eating his fav ice cream dessert ever again, but it was worth it.  Sorry dyl!😂🥔

Rewinding and reblogging for this lovely Saturday...
The kids were up and making bfast for us today!  YAY!  I like that!  Ash made some fancy waffles (blueberry, choc chip, sprinkle, plain...yumm!). And we had a nice Saturday morning feast!  Ash did some Easter planning...the girl loves holiday themed things and she got our list all made for her Easter desserts she's planning...like 8 of them! lol :). Kev and I made a remaining list of our Easter needs and hit Kroger (for items Walmart didn't have last night...score two bags of flour!) and also Big Lots and Dollar General.  Ash and Lo helped me with some preschool crafts to post on facebook...we did an outdoor scav hunt and also made a class garden with their faces and grass planted to be their hair...it turned out cute.  Shelb had a couple hours of group virtual violin...it was pet day, so she was excite to show off her fav Jed the Gerbil! :). She loves her Jeddy Poo!   Pastor Dyl made our yummy lasagna meal, garlic bread, salad, etc and he leads a great devotional every time  Maybe he will be a pastor someday?   Hays worked on lots of hw. Good ol' Calvin.  They don't let up...not even in pandemic times! :) :(  The best part of the day/night was pranking my Dyl.  I tried on April Fool's to pull off my mashed potato as ice cream prank and it would have worked had I not forgotten to give it to him til after we had dessert (Brown E's)....but this time I made his fav. oreo ice cream dessert and just as I got it out to cut it up, I put a little smear of mashed potatoes in the corner he was having.  I really didn't think he'd fall for it, but he totally did.  He actually ate that piece first and knew right away.  It was priceless.  He was mad mad mad!  I ruined his fav dessert for him and he said he'd never eat it again (and then polished off that piece and another one an hour later) :)   So I think he'll forget.  Just not sure he'll forgive. If you remember, mashed potatoes are the one thing he cannot eat even since his baby days of his gag reflux. I sure hope his future wife doesn't think this is a make or break issue :). But I got him good and I was crying laughing so hard.  I'm such a mean mom.  But I must point out that I did not laugh as hard as Hailey was laughing when Shelby cried over the dead bird this week.  Mean sister! lol :). Anyway...we all have our own humor about us!  We ended the evening watching the Silent Film Festival in Detroit on facebook live (canceled bc of corona).  Dylan was supposed to be at it for the Holocaust film he made. The film he (and Kev and Ash) were in was in the top 20 finalists.  Alas, it didn't win, but we were proud of them for making it into the finals.  Kinda glad we didn't make that long trek to Detroit, but I know his BTV teacher was bummed.  Dylan also would have had orchestra ISSMA today and I'm sure they would have gotten gold in Columbus.  I celebrated by letting him have another untarnished piece of oreo ice cream dessert :). Love you, Dyl!  Lazy Saturdays are super! :)

Free Friday! Distancing day 22

I’m too tired to post.  It’s been a long day.  Honestly my poor brain is getting less of a break than ever. What I wouldn’t do to have no demands on me, no zoom calls, no letters to write, no constant activity.  I love being him but there is still always something going on.  It was a good day and a beautiful day...outside for most of it and a school teacher parade.  But honestly having to drive somewhere is taxing and I didn’t love our crazy Walmart run but we had to go tonight bc tomorrow they limit the amount of people allowed in.  Ugh.  Crazy. I’ll add more to this tomorrow...

Adding to the Friday post...a few days late!
 Friday was a blur...and for being a free friday, it shouldn't have been this way.  We were up and moving even though we don't have school on Friday now.  Shelby and Hailey still operate as normal...though Hailey has college every day.  Shelby just has too much work. :(. Lo and Ash and I had to deliver bday presents to a scavenger hunt location for Lo's bestie.  It was a bit of work, but we had fun getting out since it was a nice day.  Normally I'd walk or ride a bike but bc Wes would be taking a car, I wanted to make sure our hunt poem/clues would work for him.  Thankfully it did. Ash was just a good sport to help.  She's my helper!  Honestly it was the first time they'd been in the van for weeks. It was weird.  Shelb had a core group zoom call (that poor girl is like her mama...we are soooo over zoom calls!  I know some people love them and need them so that's why we do them, but we are two that don't like them or need them). But her core group of girls is sweet.  The rest of us just chilled all day...played outside, rested in our bedrooms, learned to ride our bike a little better, did some rock mining (Logan!)...and we did the rainbow classroom scavenger hunt I sent to my ps kids and then built a tent over our swingset for a picnic tea party lunch.  Logan's idea!  We had fun til a tick appeared and we all split.  But it was still a gorgeous day to be outside.  Dyl played some outdoor bowling and corn hole and had a socially distance bike ride/run with his neighbor friend.  And then we prepped some signage for our awesome teacher parade.  I'll be honest, the kids love being home so much that they almost didn't go to the parade.  I think this time at home is just something our family needed/craved.  But they amused me and helped with the sign and off we went to cheer on our teachers and thank them. The parade was really cute...we really truly do have the best school and teachers.  The teachers all lined up at our elem school and had decorated cars with balloons and banners....and since we are out of district we had to drive and just wait by the school...but that worked out good bc Ash and Lo saw a couple of their best friends from a safe distance.  It was a perfect day for it.  Then we followed the caravan a ways to say hi to Ashley's other friend.  So weird to know these teachers won't be ours again this year and to know that some of these kids might not be in my kids' classes next year.  But we're making the best of it!  Then back home for a chili supper outside.  Yes, I know it's weird to have chili on a hot day, but it tasted so good!  Then daddy announced that Walmart was putting a cap on shoppers tomorrow so we bolted and made a quick race through Walmart for necessities.  I swear our kids are eating 10 times what they normally do!  I can't seem to stock up and it's costing us a small fortune (which I don't think is what we're saving in gas)!  Walmart was already prepping for the next day with a line at the door and 6ft-apart-x's on the floor and they only gave us 40 mins to shop.  It wasn't enough, but we managed.  Shopping always kinda gives me anxiety, but it's def my least fav thing now!  I was grateful at least that Kev could go with me. I think after today I'll have to go by myself, which used to be the norm, but I much prefer him helping bc we can shop in half the time.  We unpacked at home and then the kids helped me with a flashlight hunt and craft for my ps kids to post on facebook.  Seems we are always still busy. How is that possible?

CHS Day 7, Isolation Day 21--no more real school til August :(

Well, we're one week into corona homeschool (better known as e-learning) and 3 weeks into social distancing.  I only have the energy for one pic.  But it's a keeper and puts my mind at ease...reminding me that God is in charge and the world will go on after this virus is said and done (unless it's the end times...and don't think I haven't thought that since the beginning :)). Either way...life will go on for me and I should have no anxiety.  It is well with my soul!

Today we sadly found out our school year (in person) is done.  We knew it was going to happen, but when the governor announced it and it came through social media, everyone's hearts sunk a little at the reality.  It means a lot more disappointment, especially for students who love school (which is all my kids).  But actually when they were asked "how do you feel?"  They all said, "eh, I was kinda over school anyway" :). Lol!  So I think our Steg fam will be a-ok!  I thought Dyl would be the saddest of all bc he has flourished tremendously in middle school and now won't set foot in there again except to collect his locker belonging some day, but I get the feeling he hasn't really been challenged a whole lot and he's ready for high school. He will miss his friends a lot though since 90% are going to the other high school in town.  My sadness is he'll miss track, which he was very good at, his 8th grade trip, which would have been sooo fun and his 8th grade graduation, but I said tonight we will have our own backyard grad like we did for Hailey and maybe order CFA...to which he said, "I expect Pops to be there"! True dat!) :). So life will go on.  Thankfully he is our only grad this year, but I really would emphasize to other senior high school/college parents that this is not the end of the world.  I had a senior who never graduated, never had an on-time grad party, never got to really have a normal high school experience with friends...she turned out extraordinary.  I know we all mourn those normalcies, but we make those experiences our own with a late graduation in our backyard, a late grad party and other special moments.  It just takes some rearranging of the mind, and while it might be different and not what you had in your mind, it can still be special.  Anyway...so no more in-person school for the year.  Bummer on so many levels...honestly I wish we'd just get our 20 e-learning days done and be done before Shelby's sweet 16 birthday.  But alas I think we'll be done later that week in May, which means she'll now be taking finals on her 16th bday, which should have never been the case.  Stink!  But if anything I've learned flexibility with all this and no expectations.  It helps my days to go better if I have keep the goals low! lol :). Anyway...today ended our school week for this week and tomorrow is catch up day and then the weekend. I am glad for this. While there have been many good things about being home, it's hard having Kev here and knowing he's working and not able to really be with us or help much.  And honestly it's just seemed like a long week bc my mind is never at rest.  I'm ready for a little family time and a lack of e-learning.  Today was most of the same...I woke up in a flurry at 8am when I got a text from our China administrator in Chicago who asked me if Dylan was joining the new China zoom exchange program that started today.  I forgot I had agreed to it.  Thankfully Dylan was awake and pulled himself together in 5mins and was on with China.  It'll be an interesting month of chatting with them bc they have a lot of advice to give about coronovirus bc they were where we are 2 months ago.  He got to chat with his China buddy, Harry, who loves cars.  I love that our school system has this global citizenship program for students who want to do it.  So Dylan was a good sport to join in and lose an hour of his schooling today.  He also got online at lunch and did his pawsquad quiz...Ashley ended up winning it.  She was pretty proud of herself!  Dyl was done early with his e-learning.  I think it was only 9am and Ash was done.  The girl is an education speed demon who loves to get up early!  Even Logan loves to get up early. He has his worksheet set out every night and even wants to work on Fridays!  I was so proud of him today bc he actually decided he wanted to learn to ride his bike! I have no idea why my boys are not bike lovers, but I've never pushed it.  Dylan learned after Ashley I think and Logan has had no interest til today. Ash was so good teaching him and he's did really great on a big bike on the grass.  Tomorrow we might venture to the road.  Shelb had a zoom session with her church girls, lots of hw (she doesn't love e-learning...it's harder for her!) and Hays only had one class today, but tons of hw!  Thankfully most of us got outside today bc it was a gorgeous day and we played bowling, mini cornhole, and took a walk tonight (minus Hays...thus a pic above w/o her).  And Loggy was in charge of dinner...pizzas from Aldi and rootbeer floats!  I am loving our family dinners and nice variety!  I also got to zoom in with my preschool class.  It's not the ideal way to see our sweet class, but we make it work by reading them a book and singing and doing show n tell.  These are such weird e-times we live in!  Anyway...that's our day...and this mama is tired and I still have reading to do with my Lo.  Poor kid scraped himself up about 5 times today on his scooter, bike and just running.  He's a walking injury. But I love him.  So proud of my kids for making it through these isolated times. I know it's hard not seeing their friends or going anywhere. I'm just grateful we live right behind a trail! (I just relooked at the pic above...it almost looked like there's a cross in the sky...I love that!)

CHS Day 6, Isolation Day 20...A day of pranks!

Ok, you should know we love April Fool's Day.  I'm not sure when this happened that we started doing all sorts of pranks bc I don't recall doing it when Hailey was little. But I have always been a jokester, so it should come as no surprise that might children are too.  Ash researched for hours yesterday with her friend on facetime.  lol. Hard core.  She had already set stuff up before morning...so things were ready to go when the sibs got up.  Bathrooms were the first target...faucets taped, sinks taped off, fake poop made out of toilet paper rolls.  FYI...that stuff really looks like poop!  So if you need a fun prank to use all those TP rolls on, this is a good one. Shelb really did think Logan had missed the potty bc honestly this has happened.  lol. :) It was a good prank to start the morning! :) :). And Ash just kept on going...she sabotaged Hailey's bathroom the same way. And made a few food pranks...mini burgers that were really desserts (and very tasty by the way...plus you know she's my crafty food maker so it kept her busy!), brownies (Brown paper E's...and we made real ones too...Dylan fell for it! hahaha) and we made a special dessert for Dyl that we forgot to give him til later...it may or may not have been an oreo with toothpaste in it and vanilla mashed potato ice cream :) :) :).  We also did a couple doorbell pranks...an amazon box that fell open and everything fell out...and we got Hailey with a cardboard Isaiah head!  The laughter was good for the soul.  Bc as much as we want Covid to be a joke, it is not.  So we all needed some humor. :) :). Of course sadness also struck this evening as we're almost all standing in the sunroom and hear a loud bang...a poor morning dove (we shall call him "Mr. Bird") flew smack into the window and broke his neck. He was dead less than a minute later. Of course Shelby was there when it happened and she ran out and tried to revive him with a stick and then came in and lost it over this dead bird...whom she thought was Marvin the Morning Dove that always came and coo-ed by our window when we first moved into this house. I assured her Marvin was smarter than the bird that flew into our window.  So, we had a full on burial in the backyard complete with a stick cross and ol' MB the MD is buried next to Bach the Beta.  Oh sad day.  And we were doing so well before that with our laughter.  Ah well...that's life right now.  The day over all was a bit of a dud.  I wasn't feeling great and it was gray out and cold and all I really needed was some sun and fun, but alas there was no sun, and only a bit of fun.  Ash and Dyl were done with schoolwork well before lunchtime.  And then they just got restless and wanted to run around inside and play laser tag and scream. Not conducive for me trying to get work done and daddy computer guy being on conference calls.  So I sent them outdoors to run in the cold.  I think teachers are running out of ideas to give these kids...and I was too tired to come up with my own.  Thankfully Ash was pretty busy with her pranks and Dyl played a lot of wii sports (that counts as PE, right?). And Logan and Ash also did a lot of artwork (that counts as art class in my book!). Daddy Kev even made us an art wall tonight to hang it all on tomorrow.  We're turning into one big school room here in the Steg house!  Awesome!  And Hailey and Shelb were hard workers. It was Hailey's first day back at online Calvin...so she had posted her schedule on her door when we could NOT enter.  LOL!  And Shelby did the same having two big tests today.  I'm proud of my kids for making the best of this and still taking their schooling seriously.  Though I did get Ash good today when I told her all her efforts were in vain bc the governor said they had to repeat their grade next year! lol! :) :). I think everyone did this prank on their kids!  Honestly it's not a bad idea!  It would make for an easy year next year!  Anyway...and Hailey made our dinner tonight...we're getting cultured and trying new things...stuffed peppers (and enchiladas and guac and chips).  It was yummy!  Logan of course didn't eat and Dylan almost ate our trick desserts bc he was still so hungry, but we're making slow progress here with our fussy eaters!  That was the jest of the day. It was kind of a blurr.  Hoping tomorrow is warmer and sunnier!  And tomorrow my goal is to post pics on here again!  Fingers crossed!  Pops needs pics for his fading memory! :)
